1. Purchase a "Billy" can to boil water over campfire.
2. A "Footprint" is a custom-sized ground cloth for a tent.
3. A "Fly" is waterproof material that goes above the tent to protect against the elements.
4. A "Guy line" is the rope that secures the tent in place so it does not blow away.
5. To "mud-up" is to have your last drink before putting the campfire out.

Basic Winter Hiking Tips

1. Dress in layers-avoiding cotton clothing; wear polypropylene apparel that is light-weight, comfortable and naturally warm.
2. Dress your head-use a balaclava which covers your head,nose and face. Use sun goggles to protect your eyes from sunlight and wind.
3. Breathable Backpack- helps prevent excessive "sweating" and is able to carry thermos,canteen and food. Room for excess clothing including a second pair of gloves.
4. Cold weather hiking boots-purchase a pair of plastic/rubber boots they are better than leather because they do not freeze. When trying on boots, take both pairs of socks with you to the store. Use vapor barrier socks and a pair of wool socks to minimize perspiration. Take another pair of footwear camping with you when you are resting.
5. Last, but not least-Food & Water- water enough for the trip and snack-sized food i.e.- Homemade Trailmix- 1 cup of each- variety of nuts and dried fruit in a resealable sandwich bag.

1. The difference between a double and single wall tent is a double uses a rainfly over the tent and a single wall does not.
2. To keep ice in cooler longer keep it out of sun and tightly closed.
3. One of the most important pieces of camping supplies is
Bug Repellant.
4. The best place to store food when camping is in the car.
5. A Bathtub floor refers to a tent floor which comes up a few inches before connecting with the tent walls.

1. Do not pitch tent near a campfire for extra warmth for the night.

4. Best way to handle campsite garbage is to seal it up in a bag until you are able to dispose of it.
