Basic Winter Hiking Tips

1. Dress in layers-avoiding cotton clothing; wear polypropylene apparel that is light-weight, comfortable and naturally warm.
2. Dress your head-use a balaclava which covers your head, nose and face. Use sun goggles to protect your eyes from sunlight and wind.
3. Breathable Backpack- helps prevent excessive "sweating" and is able to carry thermos, canteen and food. Room for excess clothing including a second pair of gloves.
4. Cold weather hiking boots-purchase a pair of plastic/rubber boots they are better than leather because they do not freeze. When trying on boots, take both pairs of socks with you to the store. Use vapor barrier socks and a pair of wool socks to minimize perspiration. Take another pair of footwear camping with you when you are resting.
5. Last, but not least-Food & Water- water enough for the trip and snack-sized food i.e.- Homemade Trailmix- 1 cup of each- variety of nuts and dried fruit in a resealable sandwich bag.
